P.E. Policy

Aims

 

  • Promote the development of skilful people.
  • Promote the development of fitness to improve quality of life.
  • Promote expressive and creative development.
  • Provide enjoyment and satisfaction through physical activity to provide a challenge.
  • Prepare children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, and build self esteem and confidence.

 

Outcomes

Pupils should have experience to enable them:

  • To invent and improvise.
  • Perform and repeat.
  • Use and adopt skills.
  • Participate in a range of games.
  • To understand the principles involved in each activity area.
  • Devise practices.
  • Develop basic techniques in throwing, running and jumping.
  • Swim using a variety of techniques.
  • Understand how and why to warm up and cool down.
  • To work independently and part of a team.
  • To evaluate and improve their own performance and that of others.

 

Implementation

To achieve these outcomes the national curriculum areas of games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming are timetabled to cover the 4 strands of PE. Acquiring and developing skill, selecting and applying skill, evaluating and understanding performance and knowledge of health and fitness.

 

Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning opportunities will take place in class year groups and will be mixed ability. Lessons are led by either teaching staff or external sports coaches.

Teaching will take place through:

  • Organising opportunities for a range of physical competencies in a variety of settings using a variety of teaching styles.
  • Guidance during practice, experimentations and consolidation.
  • Through demonstrations.
  • Appropriate tasks set by the teacher and ideas generated from the pupils themselves.
  • Through the use of appropriate resources, equipment and apparatus.

 

Staff Learning and professional development

Staff are given the opportunity to attend courses to aid their professional development and knowledge of particular areas of PE and sport. Any courses attended will be fed back to all teaching staff through meets or INSETS.

 

Resources/ Use of equipment

Equipment is stored in the P.E cupboard and P.E shed the designated area in the hall. All equipment is labelled on shelves, access is allowed by the children with adult permission. Gymnastic apparatus is stored and sited around the hall so that children can have access to it. This is clearly labelled with a picture to show how the apparatus is carried safely and responsibly. Children will be taught and reminded how to carry age appropriate equipment.

 

P.E resources are found in the staffroom cupboard to help with the teaching and learning of the activities throughout the curriculum.

 

Outdoor Facilities are maintained by an approved CSF contractor, Currently School Grounds.

 

Health and Safely

A copy of the Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport 2016 edition can be found in the staff room cupboard. Staff are aware of its location and children are regularly reminded of safe practice through lessons. A warm up and cool down activity is taken in every lesson. Risk assessments are completed by staff and outside agencies.

 

If an accident occurs during a P.E lesson, a red card will be sent in to the office to notify office staff/first aider who will obtain further assistance. If a child receives a cut of graze, they will be sent in with another child to their classrooms to receive treatment by the first aider in their classroom. The injury will be recorded in the accident book located in the first aid room.

 

Teachers will be fully aware of any medical conditions concerning individual children.

 

Assessment

Assessment procedures are followed which relates to the school’s overall policy for assessment In line with the new National Curriculum and Age Related Expectation children are tracked using ARE guidelines; WTS, ARE and GDS the end of Key Stage Descriptions for Physical Education in the New National Curriculum.

 

  • Assessment will focus on the direct and immediate response to the student’s performance
  • Record keeping is manageable but is sufficient to note an individual pupil’s progress and to provide guidance for future teaching and learning.
  • Children will be tracked regularly in the six curriculum areas (net and wall, invasion, sticking and fielding, dance, OAA and gymnastics)
  • The school report will also form a formative report of a child’s progress, strengths and weaknesses in this subject.

 

Cross Curricular Links

  • Numeracy and ICT opportunities include using interactive whiteboards, video cameras photographs and PE passport
  • Literacy self-assessment of activity, verbal feedback, questioning cards.
  • Cultural diversity e.g., Traditional dance, customs and practice.
  • Science curriculum e.g., blood, circulation, effects of exercise etc.

 

Extra Curricular Activates

A variety of extra curricular activates will be offered by both teaching staff and external club links. The extra curricular clubs offered vary from term to term but a current list can be found from the office.

 

Inclusion 

Appropriate provision is made for those children who need activities to be adapted to participate, extra lessons are also available. Teaching staff are aware of the children with IEP’s and what they require. Equal opportunities are offered to all, and appropriate grouping ensures safe, productive lessons.
