Pixmore Junior School

Phonics & Spelling

At Pixmore Junior School, we prioritize the teaching of reading for learning and pleasure. We believe that fluent and confident reading is built upon a solid foundations of vocabulary development, phonological awareness and phonics knowledge. As a junior school, we strive to meet the child where they are in their learning and continue consistent, daily, high quality phonics provision should they need it. To allow our children to develop a strong phonic awareness and effective blending and decoding skills, we have chosen to use a synthetic phonics programme called Read, Write, Inc. produced by Ruth Miskin.  Using Read, Write, Inc. the children learn to read fluently so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read.  We passionately believe that teaching children to read and write independently is one of the core purposes of primary education enabling them to access a broad and exciting curriculum and ensuring they flourish as learners. Once children are secure in phonics to Set. 3 (please see Sounds and Mnemonics document below) they will move on to Essential Spellings. We will be hosting parents information events throughout the year so please keep an eye out for dates on the school diary.
